Shoulder Arthroscopy

This procedure uses a small camera that allows me to diagnose and provide treatment to shoulder problems. The shoulder joint is filled with sterile solutions to assist in viewing. A variety of instruments are used to view and treat the shoulder through a few small incisions.

Labral Tear

The labrum is made of a thick tissue that rings the shoulder socket and is susceptible to injury with trauma to the shoulder joint. When a patient sustains a shoulder injury, it is possible for the labrum to tear. Some symtoms are an achy sensation to the shoulder joint, catching of the shoulder with movement and pain with specific activities. The labrum can be stitched back to the socket through arthroscopic surgery.

Rotator Cuff Tear

The rotator cuff is the network of four muscles and several tendons that form a covering around the top of the upper arm bone (humerus). The rotator cuff holds the humerus in place in the shoulder joint and enables the arm to rotate. A tear to the rotator cuff can be an acute injury from a fall or chronic wear and tear causing degeneration of the tendon. Impingement of the the acromion on the tendon is believed to be a major cause of cuff tears in individuals older than 40 years. Rotator cuff tears can be repaired either arthroscopically or through a small incision.

Impingement Syndrome

Occurs when the tendons of the totator cuff muscles become irritated and inflamed as they pass through the subacromial space, the passage beneath the acromion. This can result in pain, weakness and loss of movement at the shoulder. Treatment includes physical therapy, medication and cortisone injection. However, arthroscopic surgery may be required to enlarge the space and take pressure off the rotator cuff.

Shoulder Separation

A shoulder separation is the partial or complete separation of two parts of the shoulder: the collarbone (clavicle) and the end of the shoulder blade (acromion). These form the AC joint. In most cases surgery is not necessary to treat these problems.

Tendonitis

Tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of the tendon, a thick cord that attaches bone to muscle. Tendinitis is most often caused by repetitive, minor impact on the affected area, or from a sudden more serious injury. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, activity modification, and occasionally cortisone injection.
